Xcel Energy is preparing for a possible Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in northern Colorado due to forecasts of extreme fire risk. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Thursday and a Fire Weather Watch for Friday, citing strong winds, low humidity, and dry ground conditions.
The company announced it may begin the PSPS around 8 a.m. on Friday, potentially affecting about 9,000 customers in parts of Larimer and Weld counties, including sections of Fort Collins and nearby communities. Weather improvements are expected by late Friday afternoon. If the shutoff or other outages occur, Xcel Energy crews will begin restoring power after high winds and fire risks subside. Restoration could take several hours to days because crews must inspect power lines before re-energizing them.
A decision on whether the PSPS will proceed is expected by Thursday evening. Customers are encouraged to prepare for possible outages by keeping devices charged and assembling emergency kits with essentials such as battery-powered radios, flashlights, bottled water, non-perishable food, backup phone chargers, and first aid supplies.
Xcel Energy stated: “We are continually investing in and building out our systems to reduce the risk of wildfire and limit the size, scale, and duration of potential power disruptions.”
The company will provide updates throughout the event via its website and social media channels. Customers can check outage maps online or update their contact preferences through their My Account portal. Those who rely on electrically powered medical equipment are advised to make preparations for extended outages; Xcel Energy is conducting additional outreach for qualifying medical customers.
Customers can report outages using the Xcel Energy mobile app available from both Apple App Store and Google Play, online at xcelenergy.com/out, via text by sending OUT or STAT to 98936, or by calling 1-800-895-1999.
Xcel Energy serves millions of customers across eight states—Minnesota, Colorado, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, New Mexico and Texas—and says it remains committed to delivering reliable energy while leading clean energy initiatives.
