Xcel Energy and the American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming have announced a partnership focused on wildfire preparedness during Fire Prevention Month. The collaboration aims to educate Colorado residents about wildfire risks and emergency response.
Representatives from Xcel Energy will work with Red Cross volunteers to provide guidance on wildfire prevention, home safety, and emergency planning. In the event of a wildfire or Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), both organizations will coordinate with local communities to deliver essential resources and timely updates.
As part of the partnership, Xcel Energy will be the Presenting Sponsor for Home Fire Campaigns and Sound the Alarm events in Colorado. These initiatives are designed to reach residents statewide with information on wildfire prevention and steps to take during a PSPS. The partnership also includes efforts to teach children lifesaving skills through the “Prepare with Pedro” program.
Two upcoming Sound the Alarm events will be held in Pueblo on October 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and in Golden on October 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., where both organizations will have a presence.
Xcel Energy is encouraging customers who rely on powered medical devices or need refrigerated medications to prepare for potential power outages. Customers can notify Xcel Energy of their medical needs to receive advance notifications about planned PSPS events, as well as additional alerts for unplanned outages. Some may qualify for lower electric rates or protection against credit action and disconnection. A spokesperson stated, “This partnership underscores Xcel Energy and the Red Cross’ unwavering commitment to promoting safety and supporting our communities. By joining forces as trusted community organizations, we are helping Coloradans stay informed, prepared and supported – before, during and after wildfire emergencies and power outages.”
