John M. Zerwas, MD, has officially been named Chancellor of The University of Texas System following the August 20 meeting of the Board of Regents. Zerwas previously served as Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs since 2019 and became Interim Chancellor on June 1, 2025.

“I’m honored by the extraordinary opportunity granted to me by Chairman Eltife and the entire Board of Regents, and I’m grateful to work with my senior team and all the UT institution presidents as we support the important missions and growth of the campuses,” said Zerwas. “In naming my executive leadership team, I didn’t need to look beyond our own professionals here at the UT System. They are among the most experienced, high performing, ethical and strategic advisors anywhere in higher education.”

Zerwas announced his executive leadership team, which includes several continuing members in key roles:

– Archie Holmes, PhD, will continue as Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He will oversee academic operations across UT institutions.
– Jonathan Pruitt has transitioned from Executive Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs to Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer. He is responsible for finance, budget divisions, benefits, technology services, real estate, and human resources.
– Julia Rathgeber, JD, will now serve as Deputy Chancellor and Senior Policy Advisor. She will advise on policy matters and lead governmental relations.
– Randa Safady, PhD, remains Vice Chancellor for External Affairs, Communications, and Advancement Services. She leads communications efforts including media relations and philanthropy.
– Dan Sharphorn, JD continues as Vice Chancellor and General Counsel. He provides legal advice across a range of areas including intellectual property and compliance.
– Stacey Napier, JD remains General Counsel to the Board of Regents. She serves as liaison between the board and executive leadership.

Last month Melissa Villarreal García, JD was promoted to Senior Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff to the Chancellor. García previously served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs.

Chancellor Zerwas will maintain executive oversight over Health Affairs while David Lakey, MD takes on more operational responsibilities within that office.
