In Central Texas, Primarily Primates, Inc. operates a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating primates that have previously been used in laboratories, the entertainment industry, or kept as exotic pets. During the recent SXSW event, UPLIFT Desk representatives met members of the Primarily Primates team and learned about their mission and the daily demands of running a facility that cares for over 300 animals.
The sanctuary’s staff described their work as requiring constant attention to compassionate care, physical rehabilitation, and activities designed to help the animals recover natural behaviors. As they spoke with UPLIFT Desk at SXSW, they mentioned a need for new office chairs. Recognizing that resources are prioritized for animal care, UPLIFT Desk decided to support the sanctuary through its donation program by providing new chairs and desks for staff use.
The encounter also introduced UPLIFT Desk to Baxter, a chimpanzee at the sanctuary whose paintings are sold to help fund his care. Baxter’s background includes time in a research lab and work in television before arriving at Primarily Primates. UPLIFT Desk staff purchased some of his artwork during their visit.
A representative from UPLIFT Desk stated: “For us, philanthropy is woven into our company DNA, especially when it supports neighbors doing incredible work right here in Texas. It’s a little ‘bananas’ to think how a walk through SXSW led to a long-term partnership with a primate sanctuary, but we wouldn’t trade it for the world. Sharing stories like these reminds us how powerful business connections can be not only to foster growth but also to give back when there is opportunity.”
Primarily Primates is currently constructing an additional enclosure for four newly arrived chimpanzees. The new space will serve all 31 chimps at the facility by providing room for social introductions and acting as backup housing during maintenance on other enclosures.
