The U.S. Census Bureau has released updated international population estimates and projections, extending demographic data through the year 2100 for 21 countries and areas. The updates are part of the International Database (IDB), which now also includes information for over 13,600 subnational regions worldwide.
Countries with revised estimates and projections in this release include Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, El Salvador, Eswatini, Guatemala, Iran, Jamaica, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, Togo, Tunisia, the United States and Zambia.
According to the Census Bureau’s announcement: “The release also includes data for 13,671 subnational areas similar to U.S. states, counties and townships around the world, along with enhanced mapping features.”
This update incorporates new information from recent censuses as well as surveys and administrative records. Analyses have been refined based on these sources.
The IDB provides estimates and projections for more than 220 countries and areas. It covers demographic indicators such as population size by sex and single year of age up to age 100-plus. Components of change—including mortality rates, fertility rates and net international migration—are also included in the database. Updates are made periodically when new data become available.
