The U.S. Census Bureau has published preliminary data from the 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances, offering an early look at public school spending per student for pre-K through 12th grade, as well as state-level summaries of school system revenues and expenditures for the 2024 fiscal year.

According to the Census Bureau, “The fiscal year is not uniform across all school systems and may vary. Survey data are not adjusted to align school systems to a uniform fiscal year.”

These initial findings are subject to revision before the final version is released. The Census Bureau stated, “The preliminary data are subject to change before the final release. The Census Bureau plans to release the final FY 2024 Annual Survey of School System Finances data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 2026.”
