The U.S. Census Bureau released new Business Formation Statistics for March 2026, according to an April 8 announcement.

The Business Formation Statistics (BFS) provide regular updates on new business applications and formations in the United States and Puerto Rico, offering insight into economic activity and entrepreneurship trends.

The BFS dataset includes twelve series—four application series and eight formation series—which are published monthly with data covering the nation, regions, and states. Additionally, four monthly business application series are released for Puerto Rico as part of the standard product. The statistics include both seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted data.

According to the Census Bureau, these statistics were developed in collaboration with economists from several institutions: the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame.

No additional news release accompanied this announcement; it was distributed as a tip sheet only.
