Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received federal approval to extend the application period for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients seeking replacement benefits. This extension is in response to food lost or destroyed during the January winter storm.
“Thanks to our partners in the White House, Texans affected by the recent winter storm have more time to apply for SNAP benefits to replace any food they lost,” said Governor Abbott. “By extending the replacement benefit deadline, Texans are better equipped to feed their families and recover from the effects of the freezing weather. I thank Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Trump administration for their unwavering support of Texas families.”
HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth also commented on the situation: “The winter storm and power outages left many communities in difficult situations. We are thankful that we can offer this support to families who are still recovering from the storms.”
The new deadline for SNAP recipients in Texas to apply for replacement benefits is February 23, 2026. Once a request is received, funds should be added to Lone Star Cards within two business days.
Applicants must visit a local HHSC office to request benefit replacements. Information about finding an office can be accessed through YourTexasBenefits.com by clicking “Find an Office” at the bottom of the page.
For additional information on disaster assistance, Texans can visit HHSC’s Receiving Disaster Assistance webpage. Local resources such as food or shelter can be found by dialing 2-1-1 and selecting option 1.
