Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock announced on March 17 that the deadline for applications to the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program has been extended through 11:59 p.m. Central Time on March 31.
The extension follows a federal court order issued by U.S. District Judge Alfred H. Bennett of the Southern District of Texas. The change gives families more time to apply for the first year of school choice in Texas.
Parents who have not yet applied may submit new applications before the new deadline, while those who have already submitted can log in to the Odyssey platform to update their child’s information. “This two-week extension will give families an additional opportunity to apply for the first year of school choice in Texas,” Hancock said. “We look forward to building on the record-setting demand for educational options that we have seen over the first six weeks.”
According to Hancock, more than 229,000 students have applied so far, and about 2,200 schools have signed up to participate in TEFA. Families are not required to select a school when submitting their application, and additional schools continue joining the program each day.
The TEFA program is not operated on a first come, first served basis; all families will be considered equally within each priority tier regardless of when they submit their application during the open period.
