The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program has reached the halfway point in its six-week application period, with over 130,000 student applications submitted and more than 2,000 schools participating. The application window opened on February 4 and will close on March 17, leaving three weeks for families to apply.
Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock commented on the interest in the program. “Texas families are making their voices heard and signing up for school choice in huge, record-breaking numbers,” Hancock said. “With spring break around the corner, we don’t want the March 17 deadline to sneak up on anyone. So, if you’re considering applying, we encourage you to take a few minutes now to complete your application.”
On the first day of enrollment, demand was high with over 8,000 applications submitted within the first hour and more than 42,000 received by the end of that day.
Applications will not be approved based on when they are submitted. All applicants have an equal chance of receiving funding regardless of submission time. Families can also edit their applications or update information until the March 17 deadline.
“TEFA represents a significant investment in expanding educational opportunity and supporting long-term workforce readiness,” Hancock added. “Our team is committed to ensuring students have access to learning environments that prepare them for success.”
