Taylor Rehmet, a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), was recently sworn in as a Texas State Senator. This marks the first time a rank-and-file union member has taken office in the Texas State Senate.

Rehmet has previously held several leadership roles within his union. He stated that moving into the legislature is a continuation of his advocacy for workers’ rights. “He explicitly pledges to address critical issues such as stagnant wages, retirement security and public education,” according to the IAM.

The inauguration ceremony highlighted the labor movement’s growing influence in state politics. Supporters see Rehmet’s election as an opportunity for worker perspectives to be represented more directly at the legislative level.
