Campaign finance reports show that out-of-state donors are supporting Senator John Cornyn in the primary battle against Attorney General Ken Paxton, according to an April 26 report. Among the contributors are Bruce Toll, co-founder of Toll Brothers and a member of Mar-a-Lago, as well as Steve Wynn, founder of Wynn Resorts and a resident of Palm Beach.
The runoff election is scheduled for May 26 after neither candidate secured more than 50 percent of the vote in the March 3 primary. The contest has drawn national attention due to its high spending and involvement from prominent figures. President Donald Trump has not officially endorsed either candidate but indicated he would select one following the primary. Paxton offered to withdraw if the Senate passed the SAVE America Act, which would require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration; this did not occur, and Paxton remains in the race.
Trump’s base reportedly favors Paxton, with supporters urging an endorsement. Steve Bannon described the contest as “a battle for MAGA’s soul,” according to Politico. Meanwhile, Cornyn has increased attacks on his opponent through television advertisements focusing on personal allegations against Paxton.
The race is notable for being described as the costliest Senate primary in history, with over $110 million spent on advertising by both campaigns. The financial stakes highlight how significant outside contributions have become in Texas politics.
As voters prepare for the runoff later this month, observers will be watching closely to see whether Trump’s eventual decision or further campaign developments influence the outcome.
