IAM Union General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes and Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen visited the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center (W3) to engage with students attending organizing and young worker leadership classes.
The visit included participation in Organizing I classes offered in both Spanish and English, as well as the Young Workers Leadership Program. Attendees came from various locations across North America to develop their skills and strengthen their commitment to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
Dora Cervantes emphasized the importance of providing organizing education in Spanish, stating that it is essential for all members to have access to tools needed for leadership roles. “Her visit amplified the IAM’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, education, and empowering members at every level of the union,” according to the statement.
Richie Johnsen met with organizers and young workers during his visit. He praised their dedication and enthusiasm, especially given how close it was to the holiday season.
Participants in the Young Workers program said that having union leaders present reinforced their sense of belonging within the labor movement and confirmed that they have a voice in shaping its future.
