Members of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 776 organized their third annual Homeless Drive in Fort Worth, providing food and essential resources to those experiencing homelessness, according to a Mar. 24 announcement.
The event is significant as it demonstrates the union’s ongoing commitment to supporting its local community, even as many members face upcoming contract negotiations. The drive brought together union members and supporters, including Texas State Senator Taylor Rehmet, who is also a member of District 776.
District 776 Business Representative Eric Meriwether said, “Our retired President Paul Black shared something with me during his retirement party that I carry with me always: Never forget where you come from. I’ve always lived by that, and it guides everything I do for our members and our community.”
The Homeless Drive has become an annual tradition for the district, aiming to unite members in acts of service while addressing critical needs within the community. After distributing donations this year, participants gathered for classic Texas barbecue and expressed hopes for another successful event next year.
While IAM has long been involved in both workplace and community initiatives, local districts like District 776 play a key role in maintaining strong relationships with their communities during times of need.
