IAM District 6 members increased their involvement in supporting homeless veterans by designating the Des Moines Stand Down as an official District HELPS event for 2025. This move follows last year’s backpack drive for Homeless Veterans Stand Down, showing a continued commitment to aiding those in need.

IAM Locals throughout the district contributed funds, which were matched by District 6, resulting in a total of $1,150 raised along with additional donated supplies. According to organizers, $750 is enough to provide 500 meals for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Thirteen IAM members from three different Locals volunteered at the event, with some traveling over three hours to participate. Their roles included registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery. The event served more than 500 people, evenly split between veterans and civilians.

“Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “I’m proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need.”

IAM volunteers worked alongside others to provide care packages, meals, and essential services intended to help both veterans and civilians through challenging times. District 6 has called on other IAM Districts and Locals to consider supporting similar events in their communities due to ongoing needs for volunteers.
