Governor Greg Abbott received the John T. Walton Champion for Choice Award from the American Federation for Children. The award was given in recognition of Abbott’s leadership in enacting a new school choice law, which is described as the largest day-one school choice program in the United States.
“This May, I signed into law the largest day-one school choice program in America, empowering parents, not bureaucrats, to decide what is best for their children,” said Governor Abbott. “This historic legislation levels the playing field and expands educational opportunities for students across our great state. With this in full effect, Texas will become No. 1 in education and prove to the world the critical value of school choice.”
Abbott’s office highlighted several families who advocated for more educational options. These included a family whose daughter struggled academically during the COVID-19 pandemic, a parent dissatisfied with his child’s support at school, and another who ran for public office after objecting to classroom content. Also mentioned was a family whose child with autism did not receive adequate attention in public school.
The Governor concluded by expressing appreciation for the American Federation for Children as well as parents and educators involved in supporting educational changes: “This historic legislation levels the playing field and expands educational opportunities for students across our great state. With this in full effect, Texas will become No. 1 in education and prove to the world the critical value of school choice.”
Thousands of Texas families are expected to benefit from being able to select schools that meet their children’s needs.
