Governor Greg Abbott appointed Jose Ayala, D.P.M. and Rahul Patel and reappointed Joe E. Martin, Jr., D.P.M. to the Podiatric Medical Examiners Advisory Board for terms set to expire on February 1, 2031, according to a Mar. 18 announcement. The board provides advice and recommendations to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on technical matters related to the regulation of podiatry.

The appointments are significant as they help guide state oversight of podiatric medicine in Texas, which can impact healthcare standards for foot and ankle care across the state.

Ayala is chief medical officer at Tenet Healthcare and holds memberships in both the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Puerto Rico and his Doctor of Podiatry Medicine from Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine.

Patel is an attorney based in San Antonio, serving as managing partner at Patel Gaines, PLLC. He founded Alamo Angels, helped establish Citizens for Appraisal Reform, and participates in government affairs with the Texas Association of Property Tax Professionals. Patel also supports St. Mary’s Law School Mentor Circle Program. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University and a Juris Doctor from Cooley Law School.

Martin is retired after a 36-year career as a podiatrist at Baylor Scott & White Clinics in College Station. He is a life member and former president of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association, board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, with degrees from Brigham Young University and Samuel Merritt University College of Podiatric Medicine.

According to the official website, Governor Abbott’s office has contributed to job growth in Texas, maintained its main offices in Austin at the State Insurance Building, received recognition when Abbott was named among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in 2024, focused on job creation, economic opportunities, education enhancement, individual liberties protection, parental empowerment in schooling, southern border security since Abbott’s election in 2014, and exercised authority statewide.
