Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Robert Eckels as Chair of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Eckels will serve on the commission until November 15, 2027. The commission is responsible for overseeing and regulating the alcoholic beverage industry throughout Texas.
Eckels, who resides in Spring, is an attorney of counsel at Husch Blackwell LLP and serves as general counsel for Greffex, Inc. He previously completed six terms in the Texas State Legislature before becoming County Judge of Harris County. His experience also includes serving on advisory committees to President George W. Bush and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Eckels holds memberships with several bar associations including those in Texas, New York, Colorado, and Washington D.C., and he is a Certified Fraud Examiner. He is recognized as a board leadership fellow by the National Association of Corporate Directors. Previously, he chaired the Texas County and District Retirement System.
His professional affiliations include being past president of the Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association and serving on the board of the Texas Association of Counties. At a national level, he chaired the energy, environment, and land use committee for the National Association of Counties.
Eckels also participates in civic organizations such as the Rotary Club of Houston and leads K9s 4 Cops as its president. He is involved with the International Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in Technology from the University of Houston and his Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law.
