Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $7.7 million in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 28 organizations serving the San Antonio and South-Central Texas region. The funding, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), is expected to provide services to over 6,000 veterans and their families across 40 counties.
“Texas will always honor the sacrifices of veterans who courageously served our country,” said Governor Abbott. “These Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants will provide the brave men and women who served in our nation’s military access to crucial services to help them thrive in San Antonio and South-Central Texas. Our state will never forget our veterans, their families, and their service to our state and our nation.”
“I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran Laura Koerner. “Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in lives of those who served. The San Antonio area is home to many veterans including myself. It’s great to see our community giving back to those who served.”
Chairwoman Koerner presented the grants at Meals on Wheels San Antonio. The grant recipients include local governments, nonprofit organizations, and service agencies providing a range of support such as transportation, financial assistance, clinical counseling, peer support services, housing aid, skill-based training, homeless veteran support, food assistance, legal services, family support services, home modification, rental and mortgage assistance.
Among the largest awards were given to Family Endeavors ($450,000 for financial assistance; $500,000 for clinical counseling), West Texas Counseling & Guidance ($500,000 for clinical counseling), Operation Finally Home ($350,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes), and Meals on Wheels San Antonio ($300,000 for support services; $200,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes).
The FVA program has distributed more than $359 million through over 1,600 grants since its inception in 2009 through the current 2025-2026 cycle. In May this year, Governor Abbott announced a record-breaking $46.3 million awarded via over 200 grants to 175 organizations statewide—a move projected to directly benefit nearly 40,000 veterans and their families.
Funding for these programs comes primarily from proceeds generated by special Texas Lottery games dedicated to veteran support. Additional contributions come from voluntary donations made during vehicle registration or when purchasing hunting or fishing licenses.
