Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate state emergency response resources ahead of a forecasted severe weather event expected to affect parts of Texas from today through the weekend.

“Texas stands ready to deploy all necessary resources to help local officials respond to potential severe weather across the state,” said Governor Abbott. “Texans are urged to remain weather-aware, regularly check road conditions, and heed the guidance of state and local officials to ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones. The State of Texas will continue to closely monitor weather conditions to protect the well-being of communities across our state.”

The National Weather Service predicts that multiple storm systems will bring strong or severe thunderstorms beginning in North Texas before shifting westward during the week. Areas such as Northwest Texas, including the Panhandle, South Plains, Permian Basin, Big Country, and Concho Valley are expected to be affected. Later in the week, risks will move back toward North, Northeast, and Central Texas with hazardous conditions anticipated into early next week. Potential threats include large hail, damaging winds, heavy rainfall that could cause flash flooding, and possible tornadoes.

At Governor Abbott’s direction, several agencies have prepared resources for deployment. These include swiftwater rescue teams from Texas A&M Task Force 1 and 2; incident management support from TDEM; personnel and helicopters from the Texas National Guard; roadway monitoring by TxDOT; saw crews from Texas A&M Forest Service; rescue teams from Parks and Wildlife; troopers and helicopters from DPS; medical response packages from DSHS; disaster assessment agents from AgriLife Extension Service; power outage monitoring by Public Utility Commission; natural gas supply oversight by Railroad Commission; and environmental monitoring by TCEQ.

The State Emergency Operations Center remains at Level III (Increased Readiness) status for both severe weather events and ongoing wildfire response.

Residents are advised to prepare emergency kits, develop plans for inclement weather situations, and follow official instructions. Safety information is available at TexasReady.gov. Road conditions can be checked at DriveTexas.org. Additional preparedness tips can be found at tdem.texas.gov/prepare.

According to information on the official website, Governor Greg Abbott has led his office since being elected in 2014 while focusing on job creation, economic opportunities, education improvements, individual liberties protection, parental empowerment in schools, and southern border security statewide across Texas. The governor’s office maintains its primary offices in Austin at the State Insurance Building. Under his leadership—recognized nationally including a spot among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in 2024—Texas has seen growth in jobs and record employment levels.
