CapMetro has begun work on its Transit Plan 2035, which will guide the development of Central Texas’ transit network over the next five to ten years. The plan aims to improve bus, rail, and Pickup services across the region. Recommendations in the plan are based on data analysis, coordination with stakeholders, and input from more than 8,000 community members who participated in a public survey last fall.
A key feature of the plan is Austin’s first Light Rail system. CapMetro says that data shows this project will have a significant economic impact on the city.
In the initial five years before the launch of Light Rail service, CapMetro will focus on maintaining current services while making affordable improvements and encouraging ridership growth. New Rapid Routes 800 Pleasant Valley and 837 Expo Center are part of these changes. Once Light Rail opens, CapMetro plans to shift attention to further changes in the bus network as part of ongoing expansion efforts.
Long-term steps in Transit Plan 2035 address projected growth beyond 2035 and include concepts from Project Connect that are not implemented in earlier phases.
CapMetro is inviting residents to participate in shaping local transit by attending open houses scheduled for August 26 (virtual) and August 28 at 2910 E 5th Street in Austin. Registration information is available at capmetro.org/transitplan2035. Those unable to attend can provide feedback or sign up for updates through the same website.
The agency’s Community Engagement team continues to develop programs for public involvement. More details about these initiatives can be found at capmetro.org/community-engagement.
