AT&T is reportedly exploring a possible move of its headquarters from downtown Dallas to the northern suburbs, though the company has not made any official statements on the matter. According to the Dallas Business Journal, AT&T executives have been seen touring suburban office sites.

One location under consideration is The Park at Legacy in Plano, a 1.8 million-square-foot campus currently housing JCPenney’s headquarters. The site is being redeveloped by Capital Commercial Investments and Streetlights Residential into a mixed-use property with luxury apartments. It remains unclear whether AT&T’s interest in these properties signals an expansion or a potential relocation of its global headquarters.

AT&T currently holds a 1.1 million-square-foot lease at Whitacre Tower, located at 208 South Akard Street in downtown Dallas, which runs through 2030. The telecom company moved its headquarters there in 2008 after leaving San Antonio for North Texas.

While AT&T has not commented on its real estate plans in the region, recent activities suggest an increased focus on suburban areas around Dallas. In May, AT&T signed a 12-year lease for 186,000 square feet at Lakeside Boulevard Tower in Richardson. This deal was one of the largest recent expansions within the Dallas-Fort Worth office market and involved consolidating several regional sites to accommodate up to 1,400 employees at that location.

Additionally, AT&T recently sold an unoccupied office building spanning 206,000 square feet at Pinnacle Park in West Dallas. The building had previously been used for customer-service operations.

The company may require additional space following its return-to-office mandate implemented in January. With approximately 150,000 employees nationwide and CEO John Stankey leading the organization, AT&T is among the country’s largest private employers.

Doug Agarwal, founder and president of Austin-based Capital Commercial Investments — which owns The Park at Legacy — did not comment specifically on whether AT&T was considering relocating there but stated: “the complex is one of the largest office properties in the Metroplex and has in recent months attracted interest from large corporate tenants.”

Redevelopment plans for The Park at Legacy include four new office buildings totaling about 1.2 million square feet as well as two apartment towers developed with StreetLights Residential offering up to 750 luxury units across buildings rising up to 22 stories tall. Additional features will include hotels with a total of about 425 rooms and retail space measuring approximately 20,000 square feet along with dog parks, sports courts, walking trails circling a four-acre pond.
