Governor Greg Abbott has informed the Texas Legislature of changes to two items on the agenda for Special Session #2. The revisions focus on protecting law enforcement officers and strengthening election procedures in the state.
According to Governor Abbott, one updated item calls for legislation that would shield law enforcement officers from public disclosure of unsubstantiated complaints and other information held in agency files. Another proposed legislative change concerns election procedures, specifically addressing how voters with outdated residence addresses are accepted and how voter registration is affected immediately after a registrar receives certain change of address notices.
Governor Abbott stated: “The updated Special Session #2 agenda items include:
Legislation that protects law enforcement officers from public disclosure of unsubstantiated complaints and other information maintained in law enforcement agency files
Legislation relating to election procedures regarding accepting a voter with a residence address that is not current and the immediate effect of a voter’s registration after the registrar’s receipt of certain change of address notices”
These updates are part of ongoing efforts by state leaders to respond to issues related to policing practices and election integrity in Texas.
