Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Jerome Greener as Director of the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office (TREO). The office is tasked with identifying and removing unnecessary regulations in state agencies and developing best practices to reduce regulatory burdens for Texans.
“Texans deserve a government that protects individual liberty and fosters economic opportunity,” Governor Abbott said. “Through the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office, we will cut red tape, streamline regulations, and put a check on the growth of the administrative state to keep Texas the best place to live, work, and raise a family. With a proven record of championing limited government and commonsense public policy, Jerome is an exceptional choice to lead TREO as it works to ease burdens on Texans and make government leaner, faster, and more accountable.”
Jerome Greener is based in San Antonio and currently serves as Executive Vice President of the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Before joining the foundation in November 2020, he worked as State Director for Americans for Prosperity and was Senior Advisor for Americans for Prosperity Action. He studied Politics and Business Administration at the University of Dallas.
Earlier this year, Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 14 into law. This legislation established TREO with responsibilities that include helping state agencies identify ineffective rules, calculating regulatory costs on the public, and providing guidelines on adopting new rules along with required analyses such as cost or employment impact statements.
The law also requires collaboration between the Department of Information Resources, Secretary of State, and TREO to develop an accessible website. This site will allow Texans to search state rules by subject matter and determine which activities or businesses they regulate.
